Golden Hour or Good Morning? Choosing the Best Time for Your Family Photos

best time for family photos Albuquerque or Rio Rancho, New Mexico with a family

Spoiler: the prettiest light isn't always the best time for your family

Golden hour gets a lot of attention in photography—and for good reason. That gorgeous New Mexico light before sunset can be absolutely magical.

But here's something parents should know:

The “best” time for family photos isn't always determined by the sun.

It's also determined by your family.

When golden hour is a great choice

Golden hour happens shortly before sunset and gives us that warm, soft glow people love.

It's wonderful for:

• older children who can handle a later evening• families who love warm, dreamy images• desert and mountain locations• relaxed outdoor sessions

Our Albuquerque sunsets can create some incredible color and light.

But what if you have little kids?

If sunset happens right around bedtime, forcing a tired two-year-old to stay awake for the “perfect light” may not actually give us the perfect photos.

A well-rested, happy child in good light wins over an exhausted child in perfect light every time!

Depending on your child's schedule, an earlier session or morning session may be a much better fit.

Morning sessions have advantages too

Morning light can be beautiful, and younger children are often at their happiest earlier in the day.

Morning can also mean:

• well-rested kids• cooler temperatures during warmer months• fewer bedtime battles• happier little personalities

Think about meals, naps and routines

When we're choosing your session time, think about when your children naturally tend to be happiest.

Try not to schedule right through:

• nap time• dinner• bedtime• immediately after a packed day of activities

A little planning can completely change the experience.

Beautiful photos start with a family that feels good

Lighting matters to me as your photographer. But so does your experience.

We'll consider the season, location, light, ages of your children, and your family's routine to find a time that gives us the best combination.

The goal isn't simply to photograph you in pretty light.

It's to capture your family feeling like your family.
