Cozy, Coordinated & Camera-Ready 🍂 What to Wear for Fall Photos

First rule: coordinate, don't match!

You've booked your fall photos. Now comes the question I hear all the time:

“What are we going to wear?!”

Don't panic. You don't need everyone in matching shirts or an entirely new wardrobe.

The trick to beautiful family outfits is coordinating rather than matching.

Start with 3–4 colors

Pick a small color palette and build everyone's outfits around it.

For fall, try combinations like:

• cream + rust + olive + denim

• camel + burgundy + cream + navy

• sage + tan + ivory + brown

• dusty blue + cream + warm brown

New Mexico already gives us beautiful earthy colors, so these palettes tend to blend naturally with outdoor locations while still letting your family stand out.

Start with one outfit you love

Here's an easy trick if coordinating everyone feels overwhelming:

Start with one person's outfit.

Maybe Mom has a dress she loves or one child has a patterned piece you want to use. Pull two or three colors from that outfit and use those colors to dress everyone else.

Suddenly, you've created a palette without trying to match everyone.

Mix textures

Texture makes a huge difference in photographs.

Fall is perfect for incorporating:

• knits

• denim

• suede

• linen

• corduroy

• sweaters

• jackets

Mixing textures adds dimension even when everyone is wearing simple colors.

Be careful with patterns

Patterns aren't off limits! In fact, one subtle pattern can pull an entire family's wardrobe together.

The key is balance.

If one person wears a floral dress or plaid shirt, let most of the other family members wear coordinating solids.

Try to avoid having several competing patterns, giant logos, neon colors, or graphics that pull attention away from your faces.

Don't forget the shoes

You planned the whole outfit…and then realized someone only has bright athletic shoes. 😆

Think about shoes while you're planning everything else.

Boots, loafers, flats, neutral sneakers, or simple shoes that coordinate with the outfit usually photograph beautifully.

Most importantly, look like yourselves

Your outfits should feel elevated, but you should still recognize your family when you look at the photos.

If your family never dresses formally, you don't have to suddenly show up looking like you're headed to a gala.

Choose clothes that fit well, feel comfortable, and allow everyone to move.

Because once the outfits are figured out, you can stop worrying about what you're wearing and focus on the part that actually matters—being together.
